Look. Jago and I finally met!

He’s the tall one. I’m the stripey one. Lily’s the spotty one (Jago’s daughter). Ellie’s the lovely smiling one (my niece).) The church is the Glorious Ancient One—almost literally sitting in the back garden of Jago’s lovely cornish cottage.

We’d all just stuffed ourselves with the most delicious tea and cake that Jago and Alex (Jago’s wife and the photographer) had festooned us with. It was such fun.

Best of all Jago showed Ellie and I some of his top secret techniques. Amazing. We saw his studio and everything. Very exciting. (I’d be absolutely delighted to share them all with you right away if you have a pencil—except then I’d have to kill you.)

We were on our annual family holiday in Cornwall (been going on and off since I was tiny)… so it was only a matter of time before we met and actually this year we decided it was also high time. So we did.

my friend went into Whole Foods in this outfit.

this old man (seemingly unable to help himself) screeched out from across the aisles, “LOSE THE SOCKS!”

after she recovered from the shock and realized he was speaking to her, she shouted back, “I have a very SEVERE foot infection!”

which is both unfortunate and true

(and handy as well because it sent him packing)

The last of Britain’s Army Veterans of World War 1, who died last week at 111. He fought in the trenches on the western front in “the war to end all wars”. He was a machine gunner at Passchendaele in 1917.

He never spoke about the war until he turned 100 years old. Here’s what he had to say.
